ROBACHER (JOHN J.) PAPERS

Scope and Content:

The Civil War Documents series consists of nine passes issued to John Robacher allowing him to leave Vicksburg during and after the siege of the city in 1863. Some passes were clearly issued by the Confederate Provost Marshall in Vicksburg before July 1863. Others were issued to Robacher after General Ulysses Grant occupied the city, but do not specifically state which Army's Provost Marshall signed them. In addition to the passes, the Civil War Documents series contains one 1863 article from an unidentified newspaper concerning Unionist sentiment in Vicksburg; one blank 1864 certificate for enlistment into the military at Vicksburg; one June 1863 permit allowing John Robacher to carry a revolver in Vicksburg; and one photocopy of General Robert E. Lee's General Order Number Nine, issued April 9, 1865, marking the surrender of his army at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

The Voter Registration Papers series included two certificates stating that John Robacher was qualified to vote in the Jackson precinct of Hinds County in 1867 and 1872. An 1873 certificate names Robacher as an alternate for E. Steinberg of Hinds County at a meeting of "Conservative-Democrats and Anti-Radicals" scheduled for September 17, 1873 in Meridian.

The Announcements series consists of a May 26, 1865, funeral notice for Mrs. Margaret (George) Walsh of Vicksburg, the announcement for the Grand Ball of the Vicksburg Fire Department on April 29, 1868, an invitation to the October 26, 1876, wedding of Frank C. Spengler and Josie E. Fransioli at St. Peter's Church in Jackson, and an invitation to the wedding of Charles A. Fransioli to Josie Muller on October 11, 1894 at St. Peter's Church in Jackson.

The Poetry and Music series contains two poems probably written by John Robacher. The first is dated 1863 and the second is undated. The third item accompanying the poetry is a newspaper clipping containing the lyrics to "The Bonnie Blue Flag." The clipping is not dated and is from an unidentified newspaper.

The series Receipts and Advertising includes a receipt John Robacher obtained for shipping a package in 1864, two 1868 receipts of a Mr. H. Spengler of Jackson, three undated baggage tickets, and two undated advertising cards for Fransioli's Grocery in Jackson.
