CRAIG (ROBERT E. LEE) SCRAPBOOK

Biography.

Scope and Content Note.

The scrapbook primarily contains newspaper clippings relating to Craig's ministry. The articles are indicative of Craig's success at the various churches he pastored and often contain resolutions from members of the vestry commending him for his work. There are also newspaper articles that document the controversy between Craig and the vestry of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church concerning a petition for a whiskey election in Hinds County, that had been signed by some members of the vestry. This controversy, which garnered considerable publicity, led to the resignations of both Craig and the members of the vestry in 1897. The scrapbook also contains various letters written to Robert E. Lee Craig including a letter offering him the rectorate of Trinity Episcopal Church, Houston, Texas, in 1909. There is also a letter from Craig to Bishop Bratton of Jackson, containing the proceedings of the diocesan council that elected Bishop Coadjutor Wise as bishop instead of Craig in 1916; and a letter to Craig from Bishop Bratton expressing regret that Craig was not elected as bishop in 1916. Also included are letters to Beatrice McWillie Craig from the Reverend William T. Capers of the Diocese of West Texas while she was librarian at the Estill Library of Huntsville, Texas. The scrapbook also contains undated photographs of Robert E. Lee Craig and Thomas U. Dudley, Episcopal Bishop of Kentucky, and an 1894 photograph of Beatrice McWillie Craig. There are also undated photographs of the interior of St. John's Episcopal Church, Uniontown, Kentucky.
