JENKINS (WILLIAM DUNBAR) JOURNALS

Biography/History:

William Dunbar Jenkins was born on September 18, 1849. He was the son of John Carmichael Jenkins and Annis Dunbar Jenkins of Elgin, Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi, and the grandson of Dr. William and Annis Field Dunbar of The Forest, near Natchez. William Dunbar Jenkins' parents both died in a yellow fever epidemic in 1855. He married Henriette Koontz on April 19, 1876. William Dunbar Jenkins died at Chattanooga, Tennessee, on March 12, 1914.

Scope and Content:

William Dunbar Jenkins kept five handwritten journals documenting the genealogy and history of the Dunbar, Jenkins, and allied families. The first journal, the 1894 "Memorial Volume," concerns the Dunbar and Jenkins families of Natchez and Adams County, Mississippi, and their ancestors in Pennsylvania. It was intended as a memorial to Jenkins' parents, John Carmichael and Annis Dunbar Jenkins, who died in the Natchez yellow fever epidemic of 1855. A typewritten transcription of the "Memorial Volume" prepared by Richard S. Snedeker in 1996 is also available. The other four journals concern the Carmichael, Field, Stockton, and Stockton-Field families. Jenkins' journals are based on his research in family archives and published sources. They provide extensive information on the Dunbar, Jenkins, and allied families and include extracts of selected family papers and records.
