JENKINS (WILLIAM DUNBAR) JOURNALS



Biography/History:

William Dunbar Jenkins was born on September 18, 1849. He was the son of John Carmichael and Annis Dunbar Jenkins of Elgin, near Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi, and the grandson of Dr. William and Annis Field Dunbar of The Forest, near Natchez. William Dunbar Jenkins' parents both died in a yellow fever epidemic in 1855. He married Henriette Koontz on April 19, 1876. William Dunbar Jenkins died at Chattanooga, Tennessee, on March 12, 1914.

Scope and Content:

William Dunbar Jenkins created two handwritten journals in 1897 documenting the genealogy and history of the Jenkins family of Natchez and Adams County, Mississippi, and their ancestors in Pennsylvania. Volume 1 is entitled "Early History of and Life at "Elgin," Adams County, Miss., as Narrated by Old Letters, Papers, and Family Records; also Records of the Jenkins Family Descendants of David Jenkin of Wales," and Volume 2 is entitled "Records of the Jenkins Family Descendants of David Jenkin of Wales." Jenkins' journals are based on his research in family archives and published sources. They provide extensive information on the Jenkins and allied families and include extracts of selected family papers and records. Typewritten transcriptions of Volumes 1 and 2 prepared by Richard S. Snedeker in 1997 are available.

The transcriptions were prepared by Richard S. Snedeker in 1997. Snedeker is a grandson of William Dunbar Jenkins.
