JACKSON COUNCIL OF GARDEN CLUBS SCRAPBOOKS
Biography/History:
Organized on January 15, 1931, the Jackson Council of Garden Clubs was composed of smaller neighborhood garden circles, some of which predate the formation of the council. The organization was originally divided into eight districts; each district contained four or more local garden clubs. A list of the charter members of the Jackson Council of Garden Clubs includes the following: Mrs. Harris Barksdale, Mrs. H. F. Crisler, Mrs. E. G. Flowers, Mrs. Joseph Heuck, and Mrs. C. W. Welty.
Scope and Content:
This collection consists of twenty scrapbooks that contain clippings, photographs, and original essays and artwork by club members, which offer an intermittent history of the activities of the Jackson Council of Garden Clubs from 1932 to 1973. Of particular interest is material related to the gardening activities of Mrs. C. W. Welty, mother of author Eudora Welty, in some of the early volumes.

These fourteen scrapbook volumes contain clippings, photographs, and original essays and artwork related to the activities of all of the various neighborhood garden circles that made up the Jackson Council of Garden Clubs. The scrapbooks appear to have been compiled from smaller scrapbooks submitted by the neighborhood garden circles. Of particular interest are essays and photographs related to Mrs. C. W. Welty in volumes 1, 3, and 6.
