PAYNE FAMILY SCRAPBOOKS

Biography/History:

Maybel Franklin Payne, daughter of James Martin and Counell Harold Franklin, was born on May 3, 1897. She was married to John Quincy Adams Payne, who served as chief of police of Gulfport, Mississippi, in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

Scope and Content:

Maybel Franklin Payne kept two scrapbooks that contain items clipped from newspapers and magazines from the 1930s and 1940s. The articles vary in focus, ranging from local news to national pieces about movie stars and well-known criminals of the period. The scrapbooks also contain death announcements and local news items, primarily from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which may be of interest to the genealogist or local historian.

A third scrapbook appears to be a Mississippi history scrapbook compiled as a school project by David L. Payne, son of Maybel Payne. It contains images and essays clipped from textbooks, as well as newspaper articles and artwork.
