Biography/History:

Effie Lacy Hale was born on January 18, 1881. In 1902, she married William Herbert Hale in Richmond, Virginia, and they moved to Natchez in 1906. Hale served as president of the Natchez Garden Club from 1935 until 1936, and she was president of the Natchez Cooperative Clubs from 1933 until 1935. She died on May 26, 1968.

Scope and Content:

The scrapbook contains clippings, photographs, correspondence, and publicity material documenting the activities of the Natchez and Pilgrimage garden clubs from 1933 to 1942. The majority of the volume is devoted to the Natchez Garden Club and its preparations for the pilgrimage; it also contains information concerning the factions that developed within the Natchez Garden Club and the sequence of events that led to the formation of the Pilgrimage Garden Club in 1935.

The balance of the volume contains clippings related to the Natchez Cooperative Clubs, a group which included the following organizations: Woman's Club, Art Study Club, Progressive Study Club, Garden Club, St. Joseph's Alumnae, Colonial Dames, Nurses' Association, Commercial Travelers' Auxiliary, Legion Auxiliary, Medical Auxiliary, United Daughters of the Confederacy, King's Daughters, Junior Woman's Club, Community Players, Golf Association, Rose Craft Club, and Park Commission. These organizations banded together in order to restore Auburn, an ante-bellum home in Natchez.
