MISSISSIPPI FEDERATION OF BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMENS CLUBS RECORDS


Biography/History:

The National Federation of Business and Professional Womens Clubs was founded in 1918, and although Mississippi sent delegates to the national conventions from 1919 to 1923, the local organization was not affiliated with the national one until 1924.

The Mississippi Federation of Business and Professional Womens Clubs was organized in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on May 13, 1924. At that time, the four clubs represented by the federation were located in Clarksdale, Hattiesburg, Jackson, and McComb.

The Jackson Business and Professional Womens Club, originally called the Young Womens Business Club, was founded in Jackson, Mississippi, in February of 1916. The club sought "to elevate the standards of the vocations in which we are engaged and to work together in harmony for Jackson and ourselves."

Scope and Content:

This collection primarily consists of scrapbooks compiled by the Gulfport, Jackson, Meridian, and Riverside (Jackson) Business and Professional Womens Clubs. It also contains correspondence, minutes, and photographs generated by the state organization and local chapters. Most of the scrapbooks were created for entry in the annual contest of the state organization. They include photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and pamphlets documenting the annual activities of each club. The collection also contains other materials entered in the annual contest, including audiotapes and transcripts documenting radio and television coverage of each chapter.
