LAODICEA PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH (LAFAYETTE COUNTY, MISS.) RECORDS

Biography/History:

The Laodicea Primitive Baptist Church was organized in 1840, about the same time that the town of Lafayette Springs, Mississippi, was formed. The first church services were held in a log cabin in nearby Pontotoc County, but in 1860 the congregation moved two miles west to Lafayette Springs in Lafayette County, twelve miles east of Oxford. There were usually sixty to one hundred church members. The congregation was still active in 1986, holding services in the church that was built in Lafayette Springs in 1881.

Scope and Content:

The microfilmed records of the Laodicea Primitive Baptist Church include church minutes, lists of church members and preachers, and rules of decorum. This microfilm roll contains two volumes of church minutes dating from 1895 to 1940. The beginning of the first volume indicates that earlier records are being continued in this volume. Minutes and lists of visiting preachers are essentially kept at monthly intervals, while names of members and their status, including specific dates of marriage, death, or dismissal, are generally listed biannually.
