Z 2011.000 Minter City Southern and Western Railroad (Leflore County, Miss.) Records

The Minter City Southern and Western Railroad was formed on December 31, 1904, in Minter City, Leflore County, Mississippi. The railroad, along with the Mississippi Valley Company, a subsidiary of the Chicago-based Illinois Central Railroad, as primary stockholder, was formed to serve a southerly and westerly branch line between Minter City and the plantation settlement of Dockery, Sunflower County, Mississippi. The railroad, controlled by yet another Illinois Central Railroad subsidiary, the Mississippi Valley Corporation, for thirty-six years leased its track to the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad, which was controlled by the Mississippi Valley Company in the interest of the Illinois Central Railroad. On December 5, 1932, the Interstate Commerce Commission authorized the abandonment of the Minter City Southern and Western Railroad. The track lease held by the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad, which was chartered in 1892, expired on January 5, 1933, and the property was abandoned on August 1, 1933. The right-of-way and track of the Minter City Southern and Western Railroad were sold, and the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad remitted the proceeds from the sale to the Mississippi Valley Corporation on December 31, 1933.

The collection consists of one accounting journal and one accounting ledger of the Minter City Southern and Western Railroad. The journal records the payment of funds to other railroad concerns for the years that the railroad was in operation. Of particular interest are the first and last entries. They contain detailed information, including a list of stockholders, regarding the formation and eventual abandonment of the railroad. The indexed ledger records lists of expenses, amounts paid to stockholders, and funds received from the rental of the Minter City Southern and Western Railroad track to the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad.
