UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY (MISSISSIPPI DIVISION) RECORDS
Biography/History:
The United Daughters of the Confederacy was organized in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, on September 10, 1894. Its purpose was to be a womens benevolent, historical, literary, monument, and social organization. Members included the wives, widows, mothers, daughters, sisters, and other lineal female descendants of men who rendered military, civil, or other personal service to the Confederacy.
The Mississippi Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy held its first annual convention in Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi, on April 27, 1897. Representatives of seven Mississippi chapters, including the two oldest in the state, Fidelia Circle (formed May 10, 1893) and Chickasaw Chapter (formed June 26, 1894), attended the first convention and established the Mississippi Division. As of 1999, the Mississippi Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy consisted of thirty-one chapters with approximately 810 members.
Scope and Content:
This collection consists of two bound volumes of registration records for the Mississippi Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Each volume contains an index, arranged alphabetically by the members maiden name, with married names included. The registration records are the actual petitions for membership in the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Each petition contains the petitioners name, date and place of birth, and the number and title of the chapter being petitioned. Each petition lists the regiment, unit or company, place of residence, and military status (killed, discharged, or paroled) of the petitioners relative who served the Confederacy.
