Biography/History:

James Blundell

James Blundell was born in Brinklow, Warwickshire, England, in 1817. He immigrated to the United States in 1835, and become a naturalized citizen in 1844. After settling in Benton, Yazoo County, Mississippi, Blundell and his business partner, Mr. Hagemen, opened a drugstore. Blundell married Dulcina E. Groves, formerly of Kentucky, about 1846. The couple had five children: George P., James, Mary, Thomas, and Virginia A. Blundell continued to operate the drugstore until his accidental drowning in 1866.

William E. Pugh

William E. Pugh was born in North Carolina in 1805. He later opened a law practice in Yazoo City. Pugh married Martha E. Mitchell, formerly of Tennessee, about 1846. The couple had several children, including William D. (b. 1847), Henry G. (b. ca. 1849), Mary Ella (b. 1854), and Ida (b. ca. 1858). Pugh practiced law in Yazoo City until his death in 1858.

William D. Pugh married Virginia A. Blundell on February 12, 1869. George P. Blundell married Mary Ella Pugh in 1875.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of two ledgers identified by the donor, George P. Blundell, M.D., as formerly belonging to James Blundell and William E. Pugh, as well as two folders of genealogical material. The James Blundell (Hagemen and Blundell) drugstore ledger consists of entries arranged alphabetically by last name. Each entry lists items purchased on a given day and the amount of each, as well as the total amount paid. Goods purchased include Epsom salts, laudanum, quinine, matches, and spelling books. The William E. Pugh ledger contains an index of clients last names. Entries contain the clients name and the amount they paid for legal services. However, legal services are described only as sundries, and no other details are given. George P. Blundell, M.D., compiled the genealogical material, and it includes genealogical narratives, two photographs of James Blundell, and photocopies of photographs of the Blundell and Pugh ancestral homes in Yazoo City.
