Scope and Content:

This single 35 mm, positive microfilm roll contains four volumes of New Hope Baptist Church records and one manual for maintaining church records. The membership rolls in each of the four volumes provide many dates for births, deaths, and some marriages. Only the first volume is paginated.

The four volumes of New Hope Baptist Church records include minutes and alphabetically arranged membership rolls. The first volume contains minutes from 1872 to 1940, but there is a large gap between 1928 and 1940. This volume records membership between 1908 and 1912, and it includes a number of undated records. The second volume begins with a membership roll covering 1909 to 1942, and it then records minutes on a monthly basis between 1929 and 1937. The third volume contains a printed church covenant, a declaration of faith, and rules of order. It begins with a membership roll covering 1909 to 1940, and the minutes begin in January of 1937 and continue monthly until January of 1940. The fourth volume, entitled "Perfect Church Record," also contains a printed church covenant, a declaration of faith, and rules of order. It begins with a membership roll covering 1918 to 1959. The minutes begin in November of 1941 and continue irregularly through 1954.

The first and fourth volumes also contain several other types of church records. The first volume includes an 1876 Marion County land deed for the New Hope Baptist Church. The fourth volume includes an August 4, 1957, letter to Mississippi governor J. P. Coleman affirming the church's position against the consumption of alcohol. It contains several 1957 church bulletins and requests for official letters of transfer. The fourth volume also contains lists of officers and teachers for 1949 and 1955, a budget for 1952 and 1953, and several undated financial tables.

Jesse L. Boyd published the manual entitled A Brief Manual for the Clerk or Secretary of Church and Association in 1951. Boyd used his Baptist church in Clinton, Hinds County, Mississippi, as an example of how to maintain church records.
