History:

Academy Baptist Church (Tippah County, Miss.)

The Academy Baptist Church was organized by Reverend Daniel McKay in May 1842, in Tippah County, Mississippi, near the now extinct town of Orizaba.  Reverends G. B. Waldrop, Benjamin Collins, & Nathan Harbin were first officers of the church. M. P. Lowrey was pastor at Academy Baptist Church while drafting plans for Blue Mountain College.

Pastors mentioned in the minute books typescript include: Daniel McKay (1842); C..G. Waldrop (1843); C. Bethell (1844); Compier (1845); A. McCain (1846); J.S. Morton (1852); W.H. Holcombe (1854); A.H. Booth (1855); M.P. Lowery (1865-1882); G.W. Poiter; (1882-1892); and W.E. Berry.

The Academy Baptist Church Cemetery is located nearby.  A historical marker was erected in 1954 by the Mississippi Historical Commission near Blue Mountain, Mississippi, on County Highway 700 south of County Highway 725A, on the left when traveling north.

 

Scope and Content Note:

The Academy Baptist Church Minute Books Typescript is a typescript of two volumes of Academy Baptist Church records (1842-1898) created by Andrew Brown of Ripley, Mississippi. in 1942. The minutes of the church include minutes of church meetings and lists of church members.  Included in the typescript is a foreword and map of Tippah County by Brown and gives some historical information concerning the church and the manner used to transcribe the two original volumes. The church’s Articles of Faith is included.  There are references to the Civil War and to the post-war period of Reconstruction, particularly concerning African Americans, freed persons, and formerly enslaved persons who were members of the church, Flat Rock School, and Orizaba Public School. The church’s association with the Baptist State Convention is discussed as well.

The original two minute books were in the possession of Academy Baptist Church at the time of the creation and donation of the typescript in 1942.
