Biography:

John Jackson Valentine, V 

John Jackson Valentine, V, was born on October 18, 1891, in Cairo, Clay County, Mississippi, the son of Virginia Cora Ford (1868-1957) and William Jesse Valentine (1866-1910). John Jackson Valentine, V, married Virginia Townsend (1894-1994). John served as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, 10th U.S. Cavalry, during World War I, having enlisted on June 21, 1917 and honorably discharged on April 13, 1919. John Jackson Valentine, V, died in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, on September 28, 1966, and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery Midtown, in Memphis. A concrete bench in Valentine’s memory was placed in the Cairo Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, in Cairo, Mississippi.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists of the family records of John Jackson Valentine, V, native of Clay County, Mississippi, from his Revolutionary War ancestor John Valentine (1752 - November 14, 1829), of Newberry District, South Carolina.

The records include carbon copies of letters written by John Jackson Valentine, V, in tracing genealogical material, and original documents, photostats, and typed copies of original records located in his search. The families of Barbour, Coggins, Dean, Ford, Gordon, Luther, Powell, and Taylor, all connected with the Valentine family, are included. The descendants of John Valentine of South Carolina migrated to Green County, Alabama, thence to Chickasaw, Clay, and Union counties, Mississippi.
