This collection is composed principally of letters to and copies of letters from L. Q. C. Lamar (b. September 17 1825d. January 23, 1893) and his son-in-law, Edward Mayes (b. December 15, 1846d. The collection contains one letter from Lamar to R. A. Hill and photostats of two letters to A. T. Bledsoe.

The Edward Mayes material consists of a few letters pertaining to Lamar, copies of 70 letters written by Mayes (October 6, 1900August 22, 1902) and a few items concerning the legal business of the firm of Edward Mayes and J. B. Harris. The original letters are filed alphabetically in one file and the copies of the Mayes letters are filed alphabetically in another file. The 148 original letters and papers are distributed by date as follows:

Four of the volumes are letter-press copies of Lamar's correspondence from March 6, 1885, to January 12, 1888. The first three volumes contain 500 pages, and the fourth contains 339 pages. The fifth volume (pp. 83, 20 x 26 cm.) is an undated notebook containing drafts of some of Lamar's speeches.
