Business and personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, broadsides, military papers, tax receipts, ledgers, diaries, and family pictures of Thomas Masterson Griffin, soldier, teacher and planter of Utica. Captain Griffin was born on a farm in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, on March 21, 1825; taught in the neighborhood schools at an early age; entered military service at the outbreak of the Mexican War; served in the Fourth Regiment Indiana Infantry, entered Confederate States Army in 1851; rose to the rank of Captain and served until May 1865; served Hinds County in the Mississippi House of Representatives, 1880–1890.
The correspondence is arranged chronologically, and is principally from the members of the Griffin family. Among the correspondents whose letters are in the collection are the following, together with the dates of their letters:

The volumes consist of two diaries kept by Thomas Griffin during the Mexican War, Griffin Family genealogy, an account book of Thomas M. Griffin, two plantation diaries, and two albums.
