Democratic Executive Committee Papers, Accretion (Z/0108.001)
Dates: 1930 - 1936; 1943 - 1949; 1951
The primary contents of these volumes are the minutes of the Mississippi State Democratic Executive Committee. Volume 1 records meetings from 1930 through 1936. The Democratic Executive Committee tended to meet in the spring and summer on a monthly basis to plan strategy for primary and general elections. Some fall and winter meetings occurred, but were less frequently convened. In addition to recording minutes and reports read at meetings, volume 1 includes in its first section two rolls of information on the Executive Committee's functions. The first roll lists in rough chronological order the date a candidate was registered as officially representing the Democratic Party, the candidate's name, city of residence, office sought, and the amount of the candidate's assessment paid to the State Executive Committee. The second roll presents a series of quarterly financial statements listing receipts and disbursements for the Executive Committee. These reports appear for periods that are at times more or less than three month intervals and do not necessarily correspond to standard fiscal quarters.
The second volume in this collection continues the minutes reports series. A significant gap in the information exists in that the first volume ends in 1936 and the second begins in 1943. This volume concludes with one 1951 meeting. Reports read at meetings, resolutions adopted, suggestions for sample ballots, and correspondence items are attached to the minutes themselves. A notable feature of the information in volume 2 is that the rise of the Dixiecrat element in Mississippi is documented.
