Scope and Content:

This collection consists of biographical data and correspondence concerning the first ladies of Mississippi. The materials were collected or compiled by Kate Markham Power of Jackson in 1937 and 1938 for a proposed Mississippi Department of Archives and History publication entitled "The First Ladies of Mississippi."

Box 1 contains biographical data on the following first ladies: Amelia Walton Alcorn, Blanche Butler Ames, Linda Gaddy Bilbo, Minnie Block Brewer, Roberta Young Brown, Ann Eliza Darden Clark, Alma Graham Conner, Martha Ann Jones Matthews, Elizabeth Powers McKee, Catherine Anderson McWillie, Clara Martin Murphree, Alice Tye Noel, Eliza Turner Quitman, Ethelmary Day Russell, Minerva Cage Sharkey, Mary Gillem Stone, Sarah McBee Tucker, Anna Burleson Vardaman, Judith Sugg White, Caroline Dyer Whitfield, and Mary White Whitfield. Box 2 contains biographical data on First Lady Elvira Rauch McLaurin.
