Scope and Content Note:

The title of this volume is "A Battle of the Clouds, Hoover's Capture of Lookout Mountain in the Autumn of 1863, from the Philadelphia Weekly Times, September 16, 1882, by Colonel Daniel R. Hundley, (31st Alabama Infantry,) and Correspondence between Gen. E. C. Walthall and Col. Daniel R. Hundley, and Letter of General Edward W. Pettus." This volume is the record of a controversy between Walthall and Hundley over statements by Hundley in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Weekly Times, September 16, 1882, as follows: "Walthall's surprise, rout and the capture of most of his command," and "…surprising Walthall's Brigade on the western slope of the mountain and capturing nearly half of it." In addition to the clippings, the volume contains copies of six Walthall letters, five Hundley letters, and one Edward W. Pettus letter; and two Walthall letters and one Pettus letter. The volume is 21.5 cm by 27.5 cm. in size and contains 60 pages.
