Series 26: Photographs.

The negatives in the Welty Collection are ordered differently from the contact prints of them, and I have here followed the order of the contact prints, citing negative numbers for the purposes of identification. The contact prints fall into three major groups: those photographs taken before 1935 with an Eastman Kodak camera; those photographs taken in 1935-1936 with a Recomar Camera; and those photographstaken in late 1936 and subsequently witha Rolleiflex Camera.Within these major divisions, the photographs are organized alphabeticallyaccording to the locations where they were taken, first within Mississippi, then beyond its borders. Each entry includes a title or brief description, and there is also a citation if the photograph was used in EW's Lugene exhibition or her book publications.

The following abbreviations have been used in the catalogue:

  • EW. Eudora Welty.

Grand Canyon:526(EW remembers visiting the Grand Canyon with her father in the 1920s but recalls no other trip.Since these photographs seem to have been taken with her Rolleiflex camera, she cannot have made them at that time--she did not purchase the Rolleiflex until late 1936.A letter from Lambert Davis refers to a "Far West" trip EW had made early in 1947 or late in 1946; perhaps she took these phographs on that trip or on another trip to the West that she made later in 1947, or perhaps someone else took these photographs.)88
