Series 33: Works on Welty.

Dates: 1942-1999; n.d.
Size: 3.33 cubic ft.

Note on Description and Arrangement:

Series 33 (previously Theses) has been renamed Works on Welty and has greatly expanded from its original scope of academic theses. Series 33 is divided into three subseries: Theses, Book Manuscripts, and Papers.

Subseries 1 includes theses written about Welty’s fiction and/or life. This subseries contains undergraduate honors, Masters, and Ph.D. theses. Several were completed at foreign academic institutions.

Subseries 2 includes partial or book-length manuscripts authors sent to Welty. These include Paul Binding’s The Still Moment, Eudora Welty: Portrait of a Writer, London: Virago Press, 1994; Michael Kreyling’s Author and Agent: Eudora Welty and Diarmuid Russell, New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1991; and Suzanne Marrs’s The Welty Collection, A Guide to the Eudora Welty Manuscripts and Documents at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Jackson and London: University Press of Mississippi, 1988.

Subseries 3 includes a range of materials such as secondarily sourced interviews (see Conty), a published essay tracing the eventual publication of one of Welty’s most popular early short stories (see Capers), a convocation address (see Marrs), short introductory remarks (see Stapleton), a collection of short essays commemorating Welty’s achievements (see McHaney), text Welty composed for an exhibit on her family curated by MDAH staff (see Black), as well as multiple publications about Welty including Vanity Fair (see Morris), TIME (see Jaynes), and The Eudora Welty Newsletter. Researchers may also be interested in Arthur Schlesinger, Jr’s “Report to the Jury” explaining why the jury for the 1984 American Book Award was not allowed to designate One Writer’s Beginnings as its final selection, and two typescript pages from a WJZ radio (NYC) program aired in January of 1942 called “Living Literature” that featured A Curtain of Green.

To maintain original order, the following attached letters (previously located in Series 29b) are now housed with their original items in Series 33: Letter from Paul Binding to Eudora Welty dated November 1, 1990; letter from Nash Burger to Eudora Welty dated “All Hallows E’en ‘93”; and letter from Pearl McHaney to Eudora Welty dated February 8, 1999.

Each subseries is arranged alphabetically by the creator’s last name when known, then by title if the author is not known.
