Drafts

Untitled [Acknowledgements]. 1989; n.d. 2 pieces.
This folder contains two versions of Welty's untitled acknowledgements statement for Photographs. The first typescript version [1] has handwritten corrections and a date written by Welty in ink. The second [2] is a carbon with a few handwritten corrections. Some of the corrections indicated on the first version are incorporated into the second, which varies considerably from the first, but is almost identical to the published version.

Proofs

Proof of Photographs. 1989; n.d. 105 pieces.
This proof of Photographs is accompanied by a post-it note on the first page (fol. 3), identifying it as the "Uncorrected First Proof." Accompanying the proof pages is a proof of the dust jacket. There is also a 21 x 19 mm. matte print of "Hog-Killing Time," (neg. no. 76) labeled in Welty's hand with that title, as well as her name and address. The print was originally found next to the proof of that photograph (number 32).
The proof pages include the photographs; the front and end matter of the book; Welty's acknowledgements statement; Price's introduction; and a second introduction, "Eudora Welty and Photography: An Interview," done by Hunter Cole and Seetha Srinivasan. Some corrections in blue ink, probably made by Welty herself, have been added to her comments in the interview: these are not in the published version. There are printing captions, corrections, and marks added in brown and black ink. The proof pages contain printer's marks and stamps in Japanese, reflecting the book's manufacture in Japan by the Toppan Printing Company. The proof is complete, although the final pages are bound out of sequence. Of note is a distinct variation from the published version: the inverted placement and enlargement of photographs 176 and 177 (Mitchelstown/Ireland/1950s).
