Biography:
Ethelbert Barksdale
Ethelbert Barksdale was born January 4, 1824, in Rutherford County, Tennessee, and died at Oak Valley, Yazoo County, on February 17, 1893. He moved with his family to Mississippi in 1837. In 1845 he established the Yazoo Democrat in Yazoo City and later was editor of The Mississippian and the Clarion Ledger in Jackson. He was a member of the Confederate Congress from 1861–1865.
Scope and Content Note:
Correspondence dealing with the death of Ethelbert's brother, General William Barksdale, at the Battle of Gettysburg (1863) and with attempts to return the body home. There is also one letter from Bishop Charles M. Galloway offering condolences at the death of Ethelbert's son.
