Scope and Content Note:
This collection consists of one handwritten manuscript of a speech presented by Reverend Dr. Patton on July 4, 1876, on the courthouse steps in Tupelo, Lee County, Mississippi. The speech was given in honor of Independence Day celebrations. Dr. Patton speaks at great length of the struggles in the Mississippi Territory through trade with the various indigenous tribes that settled in the vicinity of Lee County.
