This collection contains the papers of Robert Lowry, Governor of Mississippi, 1882–1890; his daughter, Lela Bartelle Lowry Jayne; and her husband, Joseph McAffee Jayne, Jr. Included is the correspondence between J. M. Jayne, Jr., and his parents, J. M. Jayne, Sr., and Melissa McRee Jane, during the Civil War and while at the Virginia Military Institute. Also, there is correspondence between General Lowry and his daughter and others except for the period 1881–1890. These papers have been removed to Series E, State Archives. A letter from Benjamin G. Humphreys, December 23, 1878; a stock certificate in the Davis Land Company, November 18, 1889; and a postcard from J. F. H. Claiborne, December 30, 1877, are included in the correspondence. Also there are letters to Ella Lowry Jane concerning the United Confederate Veterans in which she was involved, as well as her grandfather, Robert Lowry. In addition to this, there are several U.C.V. reunion buttons and ribbons. Three account books of J. M. Jayne, 1880–1883; an autograph book of Ella Lowry Jane, 1894; and several photographs of prominent Mississippians are in the collection. In 1890 Robert Lowry and William H. McCardle published a history of Mississippi. Press notices and reviews are included, as well a criticism of Mary Virginia Duvall's history of the state. The collection also contains a scrapbook of material on Confederate veterans and members of the Lowry and Jayne families.
