Manuscript of the poem "Christmas-Night in the Quarters," by Irwin Russell (1853–1879). Russell, a native of Port Gibson, was one of the first African-American dialect writers in America. This poem was first published in Scribner's Magazine, January, 1878. It was included in the collection Poems by Irwin Russell (New York: The Century Company, 1888).
