Louise Montgomery Manuscript (Z/1179)
Date: 1971.
Xerox copy of the English translation by Mrs. Louise Montgomery of Chateaubriand's Les Natchez. This book deals largely with the French in Mississippi and especially at Fort Rosalie. Mrs. Montgomery typed the translation, which is divided into 12 "books" or chapters, and also included editorial corrections. Chateubriand changed from past to present tense in the ninth book, but Mrs. Montgomery inserted the past tense where appropriate. Also included are three letters from Mrs. Montgomery to Dr. R. C. Cook of the University and College Press of Mississippi to whom she had submitted the manuscript for possible publication. There is one letter from Dr. R. A. McLemore thanking Mrs. Montgomery for allowing this Department to copy the manuscript, and one from Dr. Cook transmitting it to the Department of Archives and History.
