Scope and Content Note:

Handwritten transcription of Civil War diary kept by J. W. Greenman of Virogua, Vernon County, Wisconsin, 1861–1865.  Greenman transcribed his diary in 1898 as is stated on page one. After enlisting on August 10, 1861, Greenman was assigned to Co. F, Eighth Wisconsin Regiment. He saw duty in Missouri; at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee; Farmington, Booneville, Corinth, and other places in north Mississippi; Alabama and Louisiana. In the spring of 1863 he was at Grand Gulf, Jackson, and Vicksburg. After a leave in Wisconsin in 1864, Greenman returned to the fighting in Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, and again in North Mississippi at Tupelo and New Albany. In 1865 he was in New Orleans, Dauphin Island, and Mobile. After the surrender, Greenman was at Uniontown and Demopolis, Alabama. On April 22, 1865, he returned at his home and family in Wisconsin.
