Biography:
Jackson McWhirter Tubb
Jackson McWhirter Tubb was born on July 9, 1899, at Hatley, Monroe County, Mississippi. He received his B. S. degree from Mississippi Southern College and his M. A. degree from the University of Mississippi. Tubb began his professional career in a one-teacher school in Mt. Carmel, Prentiss County. He then became Superintendent of High Schools in Prentiss, Perry, and Kemper Counties. Tubb also served as President of East Mississippi Junior College at Scooba. He was a member of the House of Representatives (Democrat) from Monroe County from 1928-1932. Tubb was first appointed State Superintendent of Education in July, 1945, by the late Governor Thomas L. Bailey on resignation of the late J. S. Vandiver. He was elected to his own term in 1947 and took office in 1948. Tubb was subsequently reelected until his retirement in 1968.
