History:
Mississippi Council on Interracial Cooperation
The Mississippi Council on Interracial Cooperation was a forerunner to the Mississippi Council on Human Relations. In the 1930s, the Mississippi Council on Interracial Cooperation (MCIC) was formed to "educate the public to an awareness of conditions which result in injustice to many citizens, with special emphasis on education, health, economic opportunity, and justice in the courts."
Scope and Content Note:
The bulk of the collection consists of programs (many of these preliminary) for annual meetings and regional conferences of the MCIC. These meetings were held in 1939–1942.
Included in the collection are three items of correspondence from or to Helene Alford, State Chairman of MCIC, charts relating to the work of MCIC, minutes of annual and committee meetings, 1942–1943, and a file on the Southern Regional Council.
Involvement in the early Civil Rights work in Mississippi and the southeast is evident in these files, as well as the attempts by the MCIC to involve people throughout Mississippi in their cause.
