James K. Vardaman was governor of Mississippi (1904–1908) and U.S. Senator from Mississippi (1913–1919).

In the letter dated August 24, 1918, from Senator James K. Vardaman to his stepson, Douglass Robinson, Vardaman mentions the recent campaign but primarily discusses his opposition to the draft of eighteen year olds during World War I ("Its a damned outrage to rob the cradle.…") and his dislike of President Woodrow Wilson ("I do not think President Wilson has any more love for democracy than the Kaiser").

The letter dated June 9, 1919, from Senator James A. Reed of Missouri to Senator James K. Vardaman discusses his opposition to the League of Nations. The letter is quite lengthy and speculates on the Peace Treaty and possible actions by Wilson in forming a League of Nations.
