Biography:

Sorintha Elizabeth Wells Roby, daughter of Ebenezer and Rachel R. Wells, was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, in April 1835. She graduated from the Masonic Female Institute (Kosciusko Masonic Female College) in 1853; following her graduation she married Malachi Roby. Roby had two daughters, Annie Roby Harvey and Kate E. Roby, and one son, Ebenezer Wells Roby. During the time period covered by the scrapbooks, Roby was involved in a women's club that was originally called the Literary Circle. Its name was changed to the Nineteenth Century Club and eventually to the Twentieth Century Club. She died in Kosciusko in 1913.

Scope and Content Note:

Sorintha Elizabeth Wells Roby kept seven scrapbooks that contain items clipped from late nineteenth-century newspapers and magazines. The articles vary in focus, ranging from local news to international pieces about the world leaders of the period. The scrapbooks also contain marriage and death announcements, primarily from Attala County, Mississippi, that may be of interest to the genealogist or local historian.
