Biography:
Sanford R. Hughston
Sanford R. Hughston was a lawyer from Ackerman, Choctaw County, Mississippi. He was born to John P. and Emaline Burkhead Hughston on August 10, 1858, in Emory, Holmes County, Mississippi. Hughston attended high school at French Camp, Mississippi, and the University of Mississippi, Oxford. He graduated from the university in 1878 with a bachelor of laws degree, and he was admitted to the Mississippi bar in 1879. Hughston was appointed superintendent of education of Choctaw County in 1880, and he served two years. During this time, he was the publisher of the Choctaw Leader. Hughston was elected a state representative from Choctaw County in 1884, a position he held for one term. He was also chairman of the central committee of the Choctaw County Democratic Party for several years. Hughston married Ada Amason on December 22, 1886. They had two children: Mary Emma and Sanford Rogers. He was a Mason, a Knight of Pythias, an Odd Fellow, and a member of the Presbyterian church. Hughston died on March 9, 1914.

This scrapbook contains newspaper clippings related to Sanford R. Hughston's term of office in the Mississippi legislature, poetry of his sister-in-law, Alice Amason, and other articles of interest to Hughston, including speeches and editorials by Jefferson Davis and poetry and articles about him.
