Date: 1863.

History:

On January 3, 1863, the Mississippi legislature passed an act intended to provide further support for the families of indigent Confederate soldiers. The Board of Police of Panola County, Mississippi, compiled a roster of all Confederate soldiers who served from the county, apparently to evaluate the needs of those who might qualify for this support. The roster reflects only those soldiers who mustered before March of 1863.

Scope and Content Note:

The roster is a twenty-three-page handwritten manuscript listing roughly twenty to thirty different Panola County, Mississippi, companies and those who served in each, a total of 1,689 men. Under each company, the captain is listed first, followed by all of the soldiers in the unit. Included in the list are soldiers serving in hospitals, out-of-state, and at undocumented places. The county clerk provided a recapitulation at the end of the roster and signed it in March of 1863.
