Daughters of the American Revolution (Magnolia State Chapter) Scrapbooks (Z/2161)
History:
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution was organized in the home of Mary S. Lockwood on November 11, 1890. The organization was incorporated in Washington, D.C., in 1891 and chartered by an act of Congress in 1896 to promote historical, educational, and patriotic endeavors. The NSDAR is a lineage-based society with over three thousand chapters in the United States.
The Magnolia State Chapter, Mississippi State Society, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was organized in Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi, on November 8, 1929.
Scope and Content Note:
This collection consists of two scrapbooks kept by members of the Magnolia State Chapter, Mississippi State Society, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The first scrapbook (1969-1970) contains clippings from Jackson-area newspapers regarding such Mississippi State Society activities as Children of the Revolution receptions, Christmas pilgrimages, and a fortieth-anniversary tea. There is a letter and an accompanying photograph from Jackson mayor Russell C. Davis concerning his Constitution Week proclamation. Also included is an NSDAR citation awarded to the Magnolia State Chapter for attaining the honor roll. The second scrapbook (1970-1971) also contains clippings from Jackson-area newspapers regarding such Mississippi State Society activities as American History Month, Christmas pilgrimages, luncheon meetings and speakers, and state conventions.
