Biography:
John Anderson Jackson
John Anderson Jackson was born in South Carolina on September 4, 1816. He served in the Second Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, during the Mexican War (1846-1848). Jackson had settled in Kosciusko, Attala County, Mississippi, by 1850, and he was married to Susan Ann Zollicoffer, daughter of Dr. Frederick Zollicoffer and niece of Confederate general Felix Kirk Zollicoffer. Jackson was a merchant in Kosciusko. The couple had several children, including Hettie (probably Hester) (b. 1853), Tennessee (Tennie) V. (b. December 5, 1858), Mary Elizabeth, Samuel A., Frederick, and John A. Jackson was active in state Democratic party politics. His political interests led him to co-found the Attala Democrat in the mid-1850s. At the time of his death on July 8, 1861, Jackson was serving as the circuit clerk of Attala County. He was interred in Kosciusko.
Daniel Naylor Foose
Daniel Naylor Foose, son of Peter Cooper and Caroline Foose, was born in Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi, on December 24, 1846. One year later, the Foose family moved to Lexington, Holmes County, Mississippi. Daniel Naylor Foose enlisted in the Confederate army in 1864 and served until the end of the war. He subsequently entered the seminary of Southern University, Greensboro, Alabama. Jackson received his ministerial license from the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, on September 12, 1868.
Foose married Hettie Jackson of Kosciusko on December 27, 1876. The couple had eight children: Carrie Sue (b. ca. 1878), Hettie Jackson (b. ca. 1879), Blanche, Samuel J., Bessie, Maude Adelle (b. December 22, 1892), Daniel Naylor, Jr., and Floyd Zollicoffer. The couple resided in Lexington, Holmes County, where Foose was a partner in Foose and Hooper hardware store. Foose and his family moved to Kosciusko in 1886. He remained active in both the hardware business and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He was named superintendent of Methodist Sunday schools about 1895. A year later, he established Foose Hardware Company with his son, Samuel J. Foose. He moved to Tchula, Holmes County, in 1898. Hettie Jackson Foose died about 1902 and was interred in Kosciusko. Daniel Naylor Foose died in Tchula on March 10, 1935, and was interred beside his wife.

This collection consists of papers of the John Anderson Jackson and Daniel Naylor Foose families, along with miscellaneous family papers and printed materials.

The Jackson family papers contain correspondence and receipts from 1849 to 1875. The majority of the letters are addressed to John Anderson Jackson from various family members and acquaintances. Topics of the letters include news of family and friends or corn and cotton crops. Other letters were received by Sue (Susan) A. Jackson or sent by Samuel A. Jackson, and they offer family news. All of the receipts to Jackson were made out by New Orleans cotton brokers and merchants. Also included are shipping receipts from the Mississippi Central Railroad Company and the New Orleans, Jackson, and Great Northern Railroad.

Series 2: Daniel Naylor Foose Family Papers. 1866-1935; n.d. 5 folders.
The Foose family papers include those of Daniel Naylor Foose, Hettie Jackson Foose, and various other family members. They include 1868 and 1880 ministerial licenses of Foose and two sermons that were probably written by Foose. One sermon is written on Foose Hardware Company stationery.
The papers of Hettie Jackson Foose include correspondence, memorabilia, school compositions, and a commission. One letter is from Representative John S. Williams discussing Foose's appointment as postmistress at Kosciusko, and two letters are from Foose to her sister. Included are a letter from the Southern Railway Company discussing Foose's passage from Baltimore to Kosciusko and a letter from Foose's minister, J. C. Park, relating news about members of their congregation. The memorabilia includes a quarterly report from Kosciusko Masonic Female College, an award of merit, and a penmanship certificate. Of note are a flyer advertising flowers for sale by Foose and a wedding announcement for Foose's daughter, Hettie Jackson, who married Joseph Lee Brewer. Also included is Foose's 1894 commission for the position of postmistress of Kosciusko.

The miscellaneous Foose family papers include a deed, photocopies of newsclippings, a funeral notice, and two cards. The 1933 deed for a house and land in Tchula involves Daniel Naylor Foose and his son-in-law, Joseph Lee Brewer. The photocopies of newsclippings include marriage and death announcements for Jackson family members. The 1884 funeral notice is for D. C. Foose. The cards were sent to parents of students of Carrie Sue Foose requesting small monetary contributions for classroom items. The miscellaneous family papers include two receipts made out to W. C. Green, an unsigned valentine, two unsigned compositions, and an annotated business card from an ornamental painter and wallpaper merchant in Baltimore.

The printed materials consist of newspaper pages dating from 1894 to 1935 and photocopies of newsclippings dating from 1873 to 1942. The newspapers and newsclippings contain articles about various members of the Jackson and Foose families or articles of historical interest. Newspaper titles include the Daily Star, Kosciusko, Mississippi; the Lexington Advertiser, Lexington, Mississippi; the Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tennessee; and the New Orleans Christian Advocate, New Orleans, Louisiana. Of note are obituaries for Daniel Naylor Foose, Maude Adelle Foose, and Tennessee (Tennie) V. Jackson Peebles.
