Biography:

Samuel R. Walker

Samuel R. Walker was born around 1822. He resided in Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi, from about 1837 to 1839. Walker attended nearby Oakland College in Claiborne County and graduated in 1840. He had moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, by 1850 and was a practicing attorney. Walker moved to Columbia, Arkansas, around 1857 and continued in the legal profession until at least 1867.
 

Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists of one handwritten notebook of poetry composed by Samuel R. Walker between 1835 and 1840. He penned the verses while a student at Oakland College. The titles of poems include "Caution to Youth," "The Devil’s Ride," and "On Seeing a Child at Play" and a rejected draft entitled "To Byron." The poetry notebook is paginated and titles of poems are indexed. Some of the verses contain penciled annotations or corrections, presumably made by Walker.
