History:

New Chapel Primitive Baptist Church (Scott County, Miss.)

The New Chapel Primitive Baptist Church was established in Scott County, Mississippi, around 1842. It was located near the community of Pulaski, which is seven miles northeast of the town of Morton, also in Scott County. This church was part of the Good Hope Primitive Baptist Association and participated in annual conferences across the state. The association included Primitive Baptist churches from Copiah, Forrest, Hinds, Jasper, Lamar, Rankin, Scott, Simpson, and Smith counties. The church was apparently still in existence in 1974.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists of two bound, handwritten minute books of the New Chapel Primitive Baptist Church and pamphlets containing minutes of the Good Hope Primitive Baptist Association. The collection also contains one folder of miscellaneous loose papers.

The minute books date from 1842 to 1935 and primarily contain minutes of conferences and services held on the Saturday before the second Sunday of each month. They also include the articles of faith, abstracts of faith, rules of decorum, and a list of church members at the end of each volume. The list of church members in volume one was made in 1866, and the list of church members in volume two was made in 1921.
