Biography:

Madison King was born in North Carolina on December 18, 1810. He was the son of Dr. John King and Charlotte King. Madison King earned a medical degree by the late 1830s. He married Mary Frances F. Brame, daughter of James Dabney and Susan C. Brame, on May 18, 1837. The Kings were residing on the plantation of James Dabney Brame, near Pontotoc, Pontotoc County, Mississippi, in 1850. They had three children: Mary Lenora (b. August 2, 1839), Susan Frances Fannie (b. May 6, 1844), and James Brame (b. December 28, 1846). Dr. King established a medical practice and also assisted his father-in-law with the operation of the family plantation, a portion of which would later be inherited by his daughter, Mary Lenora. Dr. King died after 1889.

 
Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists of a letter written by Dr. Madison King of Pontotoc County Mississippi, in 1850. Dr. King wrote the letter to his daughter, Mary Lenora, while she was accompanying her mother and grandfather on a trip to Red Sulphur Springs, Hardin County Tennessee. In the letter, he discusses the loneliness of Lenora Kings siblings while the family is away and offers hope for her improved health and best wishes for the familys speedy return home. Dr. King also mentions hunting with friends and the condition of corn and cotton crops.
