History:
Natchez Historical Society
Acting upon the recommendation of Dawson Phelps, historian of the Natchez Trace Parkway, the Natchez Historical Society was organized by Edith Wyatt Moore in Natchez, Mississippi, in January of 1954. Moore also served as the first president of the society. The mission of the Natchez Historical Society as stated in its bylaws is as follows: “It shall be the purpose and objective of this society to do all in its power to collect all the available historical material connected with, or associated with, the history of the Old Natchez District, and carefully to preserve the same. It shall also be the purpose of this society to collect, preserve, and diffuse such information as may be available in the field of genealogy connected with the above-named Old Natchez District.”
The society acquired the Coyle House, located at 307 South Wall Street in Natchez, in 1960. The Coyle House was built by Irish-born tailor Hugh Coyle between 1793 and 1794 on a Spanish land grant from Governor Gayoso. As funds permitted, the Coyle House was gradually restored as a house museum in the 1960s and 1970s. It also became the headquarters of the society, housing archival, library, and decorative-arts collections, which were accumulated over the years.
In an attempt to downsize, the society sold its extensive collection of museum artifacts at a public auction in May of 1989. Its archival and library collections were divided between the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the Natchez Public Library in the early 1990s. However, the society has remained active in historic preservation by funding projects such as the $15,000 restoration of the George W. Miller Memorial Fountain (1911) to its original downtown Natchez location in 1998.
Scope and Content Note:
This collection is divided into four subgroups: Natchez Historical Society records, private papers and records, Adams County records, and Natchez municipal records.
