Scope and Content Note:
This collection consists of two bound volumes of genealogical materials and a handwritten autobiographical account of Sarah Frances Moore Tomlinson. The first volume contains birth, marriage, and death dates for various members of the Tomlinson family of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas. The book appears to have been compiled by several different family members during the nineteenth century and contains dates of situation from 1772 to 1871.
The second volume was apparently compiled by Mary C. Tomlinson. The first part contains birth, marriage, and death dates for various members of the Tomlinson family and the allied Caskey and Redding families of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas. Some of the Tomlinson materials appear to have been transcribed from the first volume. The dates of situation range from 1772 to 1955. Accompanying the genealogical information are biographical sketches of family members such as Charles Allen Tomlinson. Of interest is a narrative that describes the relationship of Samuel Houston to the Tomlinson family. There is a section devoted to the allied Moore family of South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas. An August 1897 list of names is included, possibly of Tomlinson or Moore family members.
The six-page autobiographical account was written by Sarah Frances Moore Tomlinson in 1934 and later transcribed by her daughter, Mary C. Tomlinson. Sarah Tomlinson began the narrative by discussing the death of her mother, Marinda White Paden Moore, in 1861. She then mentioned that her brothers, John Thomas and William Franklin Moore, left home to fight in the Civil War, possibly with the Fifteenth Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. After returning from the war, the Moore brothers worked in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, before moving to Texas. In the remainder of the narrative, Tomlinson described her family’s journey from Choctaw County, Mississippi, to Florence, Williamson County, Texas, in November and December of 1867. She also recounted meetings with her uncle, Lewis Moore, and her elder brother, James Paden, who had been living in Texas for several years.
