Biography:

Dale Krane

Dale Krane is a professor and author based in Atlanta, Georgia as of 2018. He previously taught at the University of Wisconsin, University of Nebraska, University of North Texas, and was an associate professor for the Department of Political Science at Mississippi State University. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications, including Compromised Compliance: Implementation of the 1965 Voting Rights Act (1982).

Scope and Content Note:

This collection is comprised of interview notes, questionnaires, correspondence, publications, and ephemera dating from 1963-1989. Most of the items in this collection were used for research purposes for Krane’s, Howard Ball’s, and Thomas P. Lauth’s publication, Compromised Compliance: Implementation of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

 

Series Identification:

Series 1: Voting Rights Act Interviews and Field Notes.  1977.
This series consists of interviews with Gerald Jones and David Hunter from the U.S. Department of Justice and John Ols from the U.S. General Accounting Office, as well as notes from interviews with Elizabeth Dunagin, Janet Blizzard, Kay Butler, and James P. Turner, all from the U.S. Department of Justice. It contains field notes from interviews with Mayor Doty Jackson (Kosciusko), John Guyton, Reverend H.L. Johnson, and Kay Butler, along with notes from a telephone interview with Judge David Norman from the Superior Court of D.C.

Series 2: Voting Rights Act Questionnaires. n.d.
This series consists of lists of attorneys, blank copies of questionnaires, and completed questionnaires from counties and cities in Mississippi and Georgia. The Mississippi questionnaires were sent from Howard Ball and Dale Krane from Mississippi State University, while the Georgia questionnaires were sent by Thomas L. Lauth of Georgia State University. The cover of each questionnaire contains the city or county, population, and what percentage is non-white. The questions largely relate to election processes and procedural changes related to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Series 3: Publications.  1981-1989.
This series contains published articles and essays, two of which were published by Mississippi State University. It also contains a press release and a report on Continued Voting Rights Denials in Mississippi.

Series 4: John C. Satterfield.  1963.
This series consists of a letter and accompanying envelope from John C. Satterfield to Carl Broome, Director of the National Restaurant Association, inviting him to a breakfast discussion about the proposed Civil Rights Act of 1963. The series also includes a speech delivered by Satterfield at Rutgers Law School in 1963.

This series contains two “Evers for Mississippi” campaign stickers and a volunteer form that includes information about Charles Evers and his political views.
