Bigelow, from the Secretary of State writing for the President, Millard Fillmore, in regard to an incident on February 15, 1851, in which a group of abolitionists forced its way into a courtroom and freed a fugitive slave. (The fugitive, Shadrach Manikins, was the first runaway slave to be detained in New England as a result of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law.)
