54. Ernest Hamlin Abbott, “The South and the Negro: V.—Social Equality versus Social Service,” Outlook (July 9, 1904): 589-94.
Distinction between the desire for social intimacy, which is implied by the term “social equality,” and the interaction between races in a work setting. The author argues that equality in the work place does not lead to a desire for social equality. Mr. Stone has marked this passage. “It is as right as it is inevitable that all social intermingling which has for its aim social pleasure, and involves the relation of one home to another, or one family to another, of which, in short, both the natural basis and natural outcome is marriage, should be governed by feeling.”
