18. C. K. Marshall, The Colored Race Weighed in the Balance (N.p., [1883?]). (64 p.)

Critique of a speech by Rev. J. L. Tucker, D.D., rector of St. Andrew’s Protestant Episcopal Church, in Jackson, Mississippi, delivered before the Church Congress in Richmond, Virginia, in October 1882. “I defy any impartial man, North or South, to show me as many pages of Churchy utterance more violently bruising to a people [African Americans] already deeply bruised, or a harsher and more offensive delineation of instances of great evils, and even criminality, as characteristic of the race, coupled with more ill-judged conclusions or contradictory and exaggerated statements.”
