Explanation of how the existence of slavery in the United States threatens the freedoms of every citizen, regardless of where he or she lives. “Slavery is not a local evil, that strikes only the spot on which it settles, with bareness; it is a stagnant pool that infects the whole neighborhood, and aggravates every minor disorder in the body politic.”
