First of the author’s many publications. Two themes that Mr. Stone was to repeat over the next fifty years appear in this article, namely that slavery was a positive good because of white paternalism and that people who do not live in the South can not appreciate how white supremacy benefits African Americans because it provides the basis for a workable relationship between races.
