Speech objecting to the extension of slavery via the Kansas-Nebraska Act because its passage had effectively repealed the Missouri Compromise. The speaker is opposed to slavery for economic as well as moral reasons. He argues that cheap (i.e., slave) labor results in the production of goods and products that compete with goods and products produced in New England and thus tends to depress the wages of workers in New England.
