Pessimistic analysis of the ability of individuals to overcome their inherited characteristics. The author offers eugenics as a solution. “It seems probably, therefore, that the only hope of artificially lessening the evils resulting from intemperance and consumption lies in an enlightened public opinion, which will, at the least, strongly condemn the output of children by phthisical and intemperate families.” (Dr. Reid has reversed the parallelism of his argument.)
